The zip command included with Mac OS X does offer a way to encrypt zip files without using any third-party software. This will force a system wide icon refresh and you're done. Mac OS X also provides an easy way to create Zip files from a Finder window, but there’s no way to encrypt a zip file with the graphical user interface. You still need to refresh both Finder and Dock to make the new icon appear. When it comes to software, I’ve always tried to be frugal and find OpenSource alternatives to paid apps.
